Grade Adjusted Pace Calculator
Your watch shows a slow pace up a climb and a fast one down the other side. Neither number tells you how hard you ran. Grade adjusted pace fixes that by converting your hill pace into the flat-equivalent pace, the speed you would have run on level ground for the same effort. Enter your actual pace and the grade above and the calculator returns the adjusted figure.
How the math works
The calculator uses the Minetti model, a lab-measured curve of how much energy running costs at different slopes. Run uphill and each metre costs more energy, so a 5:00 pace at a 5% grade is worth a 3:51 flat pace. Run downhill and the cost drops to a point, then rises again as braking takes over, so a gentle descent reads slower than the clock.
The output gives two things: the flat-equivalent pace and the energy cost against flat ground. A ratio of 1.30 means the grade costs 30% more energy per metre than level running, and a gentle descent reads below 1.
Reading the result
Use the adjusted pace to compare efforts across different terrain. A trail run with 600 metres of climb and a road tempo can look miles apart on raw pace yet land at the same flat-equivalent. That comparison is what tells you whether you ran hard.
The model assumes steady, even-paced running and a consistent grade. Short surges, loose footing, and switchbacks all add cost the equation does not see, so treat the number as a close estimate, not a stopwatch reading.
