Why pace matters
Pace turns a vague effort into something you can repeat and plan around. Knowing you ran 5:00 per kilometre tells you more than knowing you ran for fifty minutes, because pace is portable across distances and sessions. It lets you set targets, hold even effort, and compare today's run to last month's.

Even pacing wins races
The single biggest pacing mistake is starting too fast. It feels easy in the first kilometre when you are fresh and full of adrenaline, and it costs you dearly in the last few when the early debt comes due. Across almost every distance, even or slightly negative splits produce your best time and your least miserable finish.
Use your target pace as a leash for the first half of any race or hard session. Hold back when it feels too easy. The discipline pays off when everyone who went out hot starts coming back to you.
Pace is not the whole story
Pace tells you how fast, not how hard. On hills, in heat, or into a headwind, the same effort produces a slower pace, and that is fine. This is why many runners anchor easy and long runs to heart rate or feel rather than chasing a pace number on terrain that will not allow it.
