Age-grade percentage is your time against the open-class world standard, adjusted for age. 70 percent is strong club running, 80 percent is regional class. The calculator does women and any percentage you type.
A 50-year-old man needs a 21:18 5K for 70 percent age grade and an 18:38 for 80. A 50-year-old woman needs 24:29 and 21:26. Type the percentage you are chasing, your age, sex and distance above, and the calculator returns the finish time it takes and the pace per kilometre to run it. The age grade calculator grades a time you have already run; this page starts from the grade you want.
Time needed for 70 percent, by age
Seventy percent is the number most club runners chase first, because it is the line between local class and regional class. Find your age and read across.

Between 30 and 40 the 5K time you need moves by about a minute. Between 60 and 70 it moves by four. That is the age factor curve steepening, and it is why the same percentage is a fair yardstick across decades while the raw clock is not.
The same 5K at 60, 70 and 80 percent
Here is one distance for one age, so you can see what each ten-point step costs.

Ten points is about three minutes over 5K at this age. Going from 60 to 70 usually takes a year of structured training for a runner who has been jogging; going from 70 to 80 can take several, and plenty of good club runners never get there. Above 90 you are close to the world standard for your age, and at that point the calculator is describing a record attempt.
How the calculator solves it
Age grading is a division. Your percentage is the open-class standard for the distance, divided by your time, divided again by your age factor. The reverse calculator rearranges that: time needed equals the standard divided by the target percentage times the age factor. Three inputs, one line of arithmetic.
The standard is the time a record-level athlete of your sex runs at that distance with no age penalty. The factor sits at 1.000 through the late twenties and falls from there, which is what makes a slower time grade higher for an older runner. The standards and the factor curve are the same set the forward age grade calculator uses, a 2026 reference close to the published World Masters Athletics values but not the certified tables, so treat any time here as a strong estimate and not a sanctioned result. If a race series publishes its own age-graded results, their table may differ from ours by a few seconds either way.
An equivalence, not a promise
The time in the table is the performance the standard says is worth 70 percent for a runner of your age and sex. It does not say you can run it. Age grading compares you with athletes who kept training, and the factor curve was built from their records, so it assumes the fitness of someone who never stopped. A 55-year-old who has run for thirty years and a 55-year-old who started at 50 face the same time for 70 percent, and one of them has a much longer road to it.
The other limit is the course. Standards are set on flat, measured courses in cool weather. Run a hilly trail 10K in 25 degrees and you can be 70 percent fit and post a 62 percent time, and the calculator has no way to know. Grade yourself on the flat road races and use everything else for training.
Using the target
Pick a percentage one step above where you are, not two. If your last 5K graded 64 percent, the 70 percent time is the right target for this season and the 80 percent time is a distraction. Get the current grade from the age grade calculator, type the next round number in here, and you have a finish time to train for.
Then treat that time like any other goal. Feed it to the reverse VDOT calculator to see the training paces that produce it, and to the race time predictor to check what it implies at the other distances. The pace band calculator prints the clock at every marker for race day.
The percentage moves slowly for older runners, and that is the point of chasing it. A 62-year-old whose 10K goes from 52:30 to 51:40 over a year has not moved the clock much, but the grade has climbed from about 68 to 70 percent while the factor kept falling underneath, which means the runner got fitter. The raw time hides that. The grade does not.
How Movement Rebels fits
A target time is one number. The sessions that produce it are the work. Connect Garmin Connect or Apple Health and the coach in Movement Rebels reads each run as it lands, pace, cadence and per-kilometre splits included, alongside your resting heart rate, HRV and sleep from the same sync, so it can see whether the interval session on Tuesday landed at the pace the target needs and whether you recovered from it by Thursday.
The coach plans the block in your calendar and, when auto push is on, the planned sessions land on your Garmin watch as structured workouts. It knows your age from your profile and plans the recovery days that a 55-year-old needs and a 25-year-old does not. The rest of what changes after 40, and what to do about it, is in Masters Athlete Training.

Your age-grade percentage is the standard divided by your time and your age factor. 100 percent means you matched the open-class world standard for the distance after the age adjustment.
Questions
What 5K time is 70 percent age grade?
It depends on age and sex. For men it is 18:21 at 30, 21:18 at 50 and 27:54 at 70. For women, 20:37 at 30, 24:29 at 50 and 33:09 at 70. Type your exact age above for the number in between.
What is a good age grade percentage?
Above 60 percent puts you ahead of the typical age-group field. 70 percent is regional class, 80 is national, 90 is world class for your age. Most runners who train with structure sit between 60 and 75.
How do I calculate the time I need for a target age grade?
Divide the open-class standard for your distance and sex by your target percentage, then divide again by your age factor. The calculator above does it and shows the standard and the factor it used.
Does age grading work for the marathon?
Yes, with the same standards and factors, though the marathon grade is the noisiest because heat, fuelling and pacing move marathon times more than fitness does. Grade yourself on the 5K or 10K for the cleanest read.
Why does my race series show a different age grade?
Different tables. Ours is a 2026 reference set close to the WMA values; a series may use an older or newer edition, or its own factors, and a few seconds either way in the standard shifts the grade by a fraction of a percent.
Does the percentage keep falling as I age even if I train?
The raw time gets slower, but the grade can hold or climb, because the age factor falls with it. A steady 70 percent from 50 to 65 is a runner who kept every bit of fitness that age allowed.
