Swim Pace Calculator

◷ 3 MIN READ·NO SIGN-UP·FREE

A total swim time means little until you break it down. Enter the distance and time above and this calculator returns your pace per 100, your pace per 50, and your speed in meters per second. Swim 1500 m in 30:00 and it reads back 2:00 per 100m, the number coaches and lane clocks speak.

What the calculator does

Pace per 100 is the workhorse metric in swimming. It is your total time divided by total distance, then scaled to 100 of whatever unit you picked. Meters or yards, the math holds. The per 50 split is that number halved, which is what you check off the wall on a fast pool clock.

Speed in meters per second sits next to those splits for anyone crossing over from running or cycling, where pace lives in different units. Pick yards and the tool still converts the distance to meters for that one figure, so the speed reading stays honest.

How to use the result

Take your pace per 100 and set it as a target for your next interval set. If you read 2:00 per 100m, a 10x100 set on 2:15 gives you 15 seconds rest per rep at race effort. Tighten the send-off as the season builds and the same pace starts to feel easy.

The per 50 split is your in-set check. Halfway down a 100, you want to be on or under your per-50 target. Drift past it and you know the back half is going to hurt or fall apart. Watch that number on hard sets to learn where your pacing breaks.

Where it fits in training

This tool answers what your pace was. To find the pace you should hold for threshold work, run a timed effort through the CSS calculator, which sets your critical swim speed from two test swims. From there, build structured sets with the swim interval calculator so every send-off lines up with your pace.
