Swimming Calories Calculator

Swimming hides its cost. You finish a set out of breath but with no idea what it took out of you. This calculator gives you a number. Enter your weight, your time in the pool, the stroke you swam and how hard you pushed, and it returns the calories you spent.

How the number is built

The math runs on MET values, a standard scale for how much energy an activity costs relative to sitting still. One MET is your resting burn. A vigorous freestyle swim sits at 9.8 MET, so it costs almost ten times your resting rate every minute you keep it up.

The formula is short: calories equal MET times your body weight in kilograms times hours in the water. A 70 kg swimmer doing 60 minutes of vigorous freestyle burns 9.8 times 70 times 1, which lands at 686 calories. The calculator does the unit conversion if you enter pounds.

Stroke and effort change everything

Not all strokes cost the same. Breaststroke and butterfly demand more than freestyle at the same speed, which is why the MET table shifts when you change the stroke selector. Butterfly tops the chart at 13.8 MET for vigorous work. Backstroke and breaststroke land in between.

Effort is the other lever. A steady, conversational swim is moderate. A hard, near-continuous set with little rest is vigorous. Be honest here. If half your hour was spent hanging on the wall recovering, your real cost is lower than a flat-out vigorous read, so drop to moderate or shorten the time you log.

What to do with the result

Use it as a planning figure, not a precise account. MET tables are population averages, so your own efficiency, water temperature and technique all move the real number. Treat it as a solid estimate for fueling and weekly energy balance.

If you also run, the running calories calculator uses the same MET approach for road and trail work. To pair the calorie figure with how fast you moved, check your splits in the swim pace calculator.
