Get Started with Apple Health on Movement Rebels

Your iPhone and Apple Watch already collect a wealth of training data. Movement Rebels reads that data and writes your next session based on what it finds. This guide walks you through connecting Apple Health, what data we can see, and how the coach uses it.
What Apple Health is and why it matters
Apple Health is the central hub for all health and fitness data on your iPhone and Apple Watch. Every workout you log, every heart rate sample your watch records, every step you take feeds into a single encrypted store. Instead of apps hoarding data in silos, Apple Health is where the data lives. Third-party apps like Movement Rebels can read from it, with your explicit permission.
The advantage is control. You decide which apps can see which data types. You can revoke access at any time. Your health data stays encrypted on your device and in iCloud, end-to-end.
Setting up Apple Health permission for Movement Rebels
Open the Movement Rebels app on your iPhone. On first launch, or in Settings, you'll see a prompt to connect Apple Health. Tap it.
The app will ask for permission to read specific data types: workouts, heart rate, steps, distance, and heart rate variability (HRV). Approve each one. You can grant all or pick and choose. The more data you allow, the smarter the coach becomes.
If you've already granted permissions and want to change them later, go to Settings on your iPhone, open Health, tap Data Access & Devices, find Movement Rebels, and toggle the data types on or off. Changes take effect immediately. There's no need to reinstall the app.
What data Movement Rebels reads from Apple Health
Once connected, Movement Rebels can read:
- Workouts. Every workout you log in the native Fitness app or any app that writes workouts to Apple Health (Strava and many running apps do; Garmin syncs steps and heart rate but not full workout sessions by default). The coach sees workout type, duration, calories burned, heart rate during the session, and GPS route if available.
- Heart rate. Continuous heart rate during workouts and background samples throughout the day. Apple Watch records this passively. The coach uses real-time heart rate to understand training intensity and recovery.
- Steps and distance. Daily totals and per-minute samples. The coach factors this in to gauge activity level outside of structured training.
- Heart rate variability (HRV). A measure of the variation between heartbeats. On older Apple Watch software, HRV was captured only during Breathe and Mindfulness exercises. On watchOS 9 and later, the watch also records HRV samples during sleep. Either way, the data flows into Apple Health and the coach can read it. Higher HRV often correlates with readiness; the coach uses this as one signal among many to decide whether you should push or recover today.
- Resting heart rate. A daily estimate based on overnight readings. A rise in resting heart rate can signal fatigue or illness. The coach watches for this trend.
Data flows one direction: into Movement Rebels. We do not modify your Apple Health data. Workouts you complete in Movement Rebels can be logged to Health if you choose (that's up to you).
How the coach uses this data
The Movement Rebels AI coach reads every data type you grant access to and uses it to adapt your training plan. Here's how:
If your Garmin or Apple Watch shows a spike in resting heart rate and your HRV dropped overnight, the coach knows you're not fully recovered. It swaps a hard interval session for an easier, shorter workout rather than sticking to the plan. If you logged a high-intensity sport in another app (a soccer match, a pick-up basketball game), the coach factors that accumulated fatigue into the week and adjusts the plan's intensity.
The coach also reads your step count to understand your activity baseline. Ten thousand steps a day from a desk job is different from ten thousand from a trade or service work. The coach calibrates accordingly.
The coach reads actual workouts in your history, not estimates. It reads your heart rate and HRV, not assumptions about recovery. Adaptation is specific, not generic.
Syncing: automatic and reliable
Once you grant permission, Apple Health syncing happens automatically. The Movement Rebels app checks for new data from Apple Health in the background. New workouts appear within minutes. Heart rate and HRV samples sync passively without you doing anything.
iCloud sync keeps your data consistent across devices. If you have an iPhone and an iPad, Apple Health data stays in sync across both. If you log a workout on one device, the other sees it immediately (assuming both are on the same iCloud account).
The sync is encrypted at rest and in transit. Your health data never leaves your device in unencrypted form, even when stored in iCloud. Apple's infrastructure handles the encryption.
What data is not available from Apple Health
Not everything you might want is readable from Apple Health. Wearables like Oura Ring and Whoop sync some metrics to Apple Health but not all. For example, Oura does not currently write heart rate variability (HRV) data directly to Apple Health, even though HRV is a core Oura metric. Similarly, Whoop data does not include HRV syncing to Apple Health.
On the Apple side, HealthKit HRV captures different stress-recovery signals than Whoop's or Oura's sleep-based HRV. On older watchOS versions, HRV was recorded only during Breathe and Mindfulness exercises. On watchOS 9 and later, the watch also samples HRV during sleep, closing some of that gap.
If you use a non-Apple wearable, check the app documentation to see which metrics it syncs to Apple Health. If the metric you care about isn't listed, it won't be available to Movement Rebels either.
Battery and performance
A common question: does syncing Apple Health drain your battery? The short answer is no, if your Health app data is clean. For most users, Apple Health background refresh has negligible battery impact.
However, in rare cases where the Health database becomes corrupted or bloated, battery drain can occur. This is not a syncing design flaw: it's a data corruption issue. If you notice unusual battery drain and Health is the culprit, a factory reset and iCloud restore can resolve it, but this is uncommon.
For typical users with clean data, you won't notice any battery impact from Apple Health syncing in the background.
Sharing your Health data beyond Movement Rebels
If you use other apps and want to share data among them, Apple Health supports syncing with compatible third-party workout apps. Strava activities and any app with HealthKit support can feed into Apple Health simultaneously. Note that Garmin syncs steps and heart rate to Apple Health, not full workout sessions by default. This centralization means your data is never locked into a single app.
Privacy and who sees your data
Apple Health data on your device is encrypted with a passcode, Touch ID, or Face ID. If someone unlocks your iPhone, they can see your health data. Medical ID is excluded from the lock. When iCloud syncs your health data, end-to-end encryption is applied if you have two-factor authentication enabled.
Movement Rebels accesses only the data types you explicitly permitted. The app cannot see data you denied. If you delete data from Apple Health, it's removed from all synced devices and cannot be recovered except from backups.
How Movement Rebels fits
The limiting factor in training isn't knowing what to do. It's adapting what to do based on what happened. You ran hard yesterday, so today should be recovery. You slept poorly, so the plan shifts. You've racked up 25,000 steps from work on top of a 15 km run, so fatigue is real even if you feel okay.

The coach also reads your Garmin data if you have it, syncing intensity from both ecosystems. When you log a workout in any app, the coach sees it and responds.
