Most athletes chase recovery through sleep and easy days. Both matter. What NSDR is (and what it's not)
NSDR stands for Non-Sleep Deep Rest. It is a guided relaxation technique, usually 15-30 minutes, where you lie down while an instructor or audio guide walks you through systematic attention to different parts of your body. The goal is not to fall asleep. It is to move your nervous system from a sympathetic (alert, stressed) state into a parasympathetic (rested, recovered) state while staying conscious the whole time. You are aware, but your body is deeply relaxed.
Yoga nidra, which translates to "yogic sleep," is the ancient practice NSDR comes from. Modern NSDR draws on that tradition but is often framed through neuroscience. The physiological outcome is the same: lower heart rate, lower cortisol, activation of the vagus nerve, and a shift into parasympathetic tone.
This is not meditation. Meditation trains attention and awareness. NSDR is passive: you listen and follow cues, not practice mental discipline. You do not need to clear your mind or sit upright. How NSDR differs from sleep (and why it matters)

- The night before a key workout. Pre-competition or pre-race nerves keep you awake or waking. NSDR 20-30 minutes before bed lowers arousal and primes sleep. You will fall asleep faster and wake less.

Setup (5 minutes):
- Lie on your back on a yoga mat, carpet, or bed. Legs extended, arms at your sides with palms up. Head neutral, no pillow. Cover yourself lightly if you get cold.
- Set a timer for 15-30 minutes (start with 20). You will not oversleep into NSDR; when the time ends, you wake naturally.
- Dim the lights. No phone, no distractions.
Introduction (1 minute): Listen to a guided NSDR audio (freely available on YouTube, Insight Timer, or Spotify by searching "yoga nidra" or "NSDR for sleep"). Or follow these cues yourself.
Body scan (10-15 minutes): A guided voice walks you through each body part: right hand and arm, left hand and arm, right leg, left foot, torso, head. On each part, the cue might be "notice the sensations in your right foot without trying to change them" or "relax and release." You do nothing. You notice and follow.
Breath awareness (3-5 minutes): Shift focus to your breath. You do not control it. You notice the natural rhythm of breathing in and out. Stay aware of the breath until the session ends.
Return to wakefulness (1 minute): The guide counts backward or gently brings your attention back. You remain lying for another 30 seconds before sitting up. Move slowly; your blood pressure is low.

Common mistakes
