SWOLF Calculator

◷ 3 MIN READ·NO SIGN-UP·FREE

Speed alone hides how hard you work for it. SWOLF puts a single number on swim efficiency by adding your time and your stroke count for one length. Swim a length, count your strokes, note the seconds, and enter both above. A lower score means you cover more water per stroke.

What SWOLF measures

SWOLF stands for swim golf, and like golf, the lower number wins. The math is plain: seconds per length plus strokes per length. A 25 m length in 20 seconds at 18 strokes scores 38.

The reason it works is the trade-off it exposes. You can drop your time by thrashing harder, but your stroke count climbs and your SWOLF barely moves. You can drop your stroke count by gliding longer, but your time stretches and again the score holds. A real efficiency gain pulls both down at once, and SWOLF is the one figure that catches it.

Reading your band

The benchmark above is set for freestyle, because stroke count and time both scale with how far you swim. A 50 m length stacks up more of each than a 25 m or 25 yd one, so its scores run roughly double. The calculator adjusts the band to the length you pick.

Other strokes sit higher at the same effort. Breaststroke and butterfly add strokes and seconds that freestyle does not, so the freestyle band does not apply. For those, track your own scores over time and watch the trend instead of a fixed target.

Using it to train

Test SWOLF at one steady, repeatable pace, not an all-out sprint. Sprinting inflates both numbers and tells you little about efficiency. Pick an easy aerobic effort, swim a few lengths, average the score, and retest every few weeks at that same pace so you compare like with like.

Pair it with your speed work. The swim pace calculator sets your target time per length, and critical swim speed anchors your threshold paces for intervals. SWOLF then tells you whether the speed you are holding is bought with clean technique or brute force.
