MET tables describe an average person at that body weight. Real burn moves with fitness, terrain, heat, running economy and how much muscle you carry, so read this as a band rather than a figure. A chest strap or a device estimate lands closer. The number also includes the calories you would have burned sitting still over the same minutes, so it is gross, not net.
Thirty minutes on a treadmill at 3.5 mph, flat, costs a 70 kg person about 176 kcal. Push the belt to 6 mph and jog, and the same half hour is about 342. The calculator above does that sum for any speed in the list, any weight and any duration, and prints the MET value it used so you can compare it with what the console claims.

Notice the crossover. Walking at 5 to 5.5 mph costs 8.3 MET, almost the same as running at 5 mph, because walking gets mechanically awkward above about 4.5 mph and the body starts spending energy to stay in a walk. If the console lets you, run at that speed instead. Same burn, kinder on the hips.

The formula
kcal per minute = MET x 3.5 x body weight in kg / 200
For the 3.5 mph walker: 4.8 x 3.5 x 70 / 200 = 5.88 kcal per minute, times 30, 176 kcal. Compendium code 17358. Every activity in the list below the calculator carries its code so you can check the source entry.
What incline does
The table is flat belt. Incline changes it more than most people expect, and the console's own estimate usually runs the ACSM walking equation to account for it: oxygen cost in ml/kg/min = 3.5 + 0.1 x speed in metres per minute + 1.8 x speed x grade. At 3.5 mph, 94 metres per minute, the level cost is about 12.9 ml/kg/min, or 3.7 MET. Each percent of incline adds 1.7 ml/kg/min on top, close to half a MET, so 5 percent takes the walk to about 6.1 MET and 10 percent to about 8.5. A flat walk becomes a hard run's worth of burn without a single running stride, which is why incline walking is the staple of so many fat-loss blocks.
Two footnotes to that. The ACSM level-walking figure, 3.7 MET, sits under the Compendium's measured 4.8 for the same speed, so two calculators can disagree by a quarter before anyone touches the incline button. And holding the handrails on an incline gives a good part of the climb back: most measurements put the saving at a fifth to a third of the cost. If the number matters to you, let go of the rails and drop the grade until you can.
For running, 1 percent of incline is the usual correction for the missing wind resistance at paces around 5 minutes per km and faster. Below that pace the belt at 0 percent is close enough. A curved, non-motorised treadmill is a different machine: the Compendium lists 11.0 MET for running at 5 to 5.9 mph on one, against 9.0 for the same speed on a motor belt, because you are driving the belt yourself.
The console is guessing too
Every number here describes an average person of your weight, and the console's number describes an average person of whatever weight it assumed, which is often 70 to 75 kg unless you typed yours in. Neither knows your running economy, which can put two people at the same speed 10 to 15 percent apart in oxygen cost, nor that your resting rate may sit below the 3.5 ml/kg/min both formulas start from, as it does for many heavier and older adults. Read either figure as a band, plus or minus 20 percent, and let a few weeks of weight trend tell you which edge of the band you live at.
The figure is also gross, including the roughly 1 MET you would spend sitting through the same 30 minutes. Subtract 1 from the MET for the net exercise cost. A treadmill session is one line in a day's budget. Put it against your TDEE, size the gap with the calorie deficit calculator, and use the net figure rather than the gross one when you eat any of it back. Questions
Is the treadmill calorie display accurate?
It is an estimate, usually from the ACSM equations, and it assumes a default body weight unless you entered yours. Expect it to sit within about 20 percent of a lab measurement on a good day, further off if you hold the rails or the machine has never asked how much you weigh.
How many calories does 30 minutes on a treadmill burn?
At 70 kg: about 176 kcal walking at 3.5 mph flat, about 213 at 4.0 mph, and about 342 jogging at 6 mph. Add incline and the walking figures climb fast; 3.5 mph at 10 percent is closer to 310.
Does incline walking burn more than running?
It can. At 3.5 mph and 10 percent grade the ACSM equation gives about 8.5 MET, on par with running at 5 mph. Running at 6 mph and above still burns more per minute, but incline walking gets most of the way there with far less impact.
Should I set the treadmill to 1 percent?
For running at around 5 minutes per km and faster, yes, it makes the belt cost about the same as the road. For walking and easy jogging, 0 percent is fine. Incline above 1 percent is a training choice, not a correction.
