VO2 max in ml/kg/min. The Harvard test returns a recovery index rather than a VO2 max, so that is what this page prints for it.
The Harvard step test gives you a Physical Fitness Index, a score for how fast your heart rate falls after five minutes of stepping, and the calculator above computes it: 100 times the seconds you lasted, divided by twice the sum of three 30-second pulse counts. The index is a recovery score. There is no equation behind the VO2 max conversions that other pages print for it that is worth quoting, so this page prints the index, rates it, and sends you to the Queens College step test when you want an oxygen number.

Bands after Fox and colleagues, 1973. Three worked examples show how the two inputs trade off. Last the full 300 seconds with counts of 75, 65 and 55 and the index is 30,000 divided by 390, which is 76.9, average. Last the full 300 with counts of 90, 80 and 70 and it drops to 62.5, low average. Quit at 240 seconds with counts of 85, 75 and 65 and you get 53.3, poor. Lasting matters, and then recovering matters.
What you need
A step 20 inches (50.8 cm) high for men or 16 inches (40 cm) for women, which is how the calculator and most published versions set it. A metronome app at 120 beats per minute, one beat per foot movement. A clock you can see. A chair to sit on afterwards. A way to count your pulse for 30 seconds at a time, or a chest strap you can read.
How to run it

If you only took the first count, the calculator falls back to the short form, (100 x seconds) divided by (5.5 x the first count), and labels it as such. Do the long form when you can; three counts smooth out a mistimed one.
What invalidates the result
The wrong step height, since a 40 cm box for a man is a different and easier test. Cadence that drifts below 30 without you noticing, which is what the metronome is for. Standing or walking during the recovery counts. A count that started early or late by more than a couple of seconds. Caffeine, heat, a hard session earlier in the day or a bad night, every one of which slows recovery heart rate and knocks points off an index that measures exactly that.
What the index is and is not
Brouha published the test in 1943 from the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, where it was developed to screen young men for endurance work. The score rises if you last longer and it rises if your heart rate falls faster, and those are two real fitness signals, but they are recovery signals. VO2 max is how much oxygen you can use at your limit, and two people with the same VO2 max can recover at different speeds, so any page that turns an index of 80 into "44 ml/kg/min" is inventing a precision the test never had. When you want the oxygen number, the Queens College step test is the step test that returns one, the Cooper test is the reference, and the Rockport walk test covers anyone who should not be running hard. The index still earns its place. It is one of the oldest field measures of recovery, and recovery heart rate remains one of the cleanest single signals of aerobic fitness you can take without equipment.
Five minutes at 30 steps a minute on a 50 cm box is harder than the description sounds and the original subjects were military-age men. A heart condition, chest pain on exertion, blood pressure nobody is managing, bad knees or a history of falls: get cleared first, or take the walk test and come back to this one later. The same population scatter applies as everywhere in this cluster. One test on one day is a snapshot, and the bands are averages from a 1973 sample, so put your weight on the trend across repeats rather than the first number.

Norms from The Y's Way to Physical Fitness (Golding et al., 1986), as reproduced in the ACE Personal Trainer Manual. Field-test estimates carry a few points of error on top of that, so treat a band boundary as a soft line.

Physical Fitness Index = (100 x seconds lasted) / (2 x the sum of three 30-second pulse counts taken at 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 after stopping). Above 96 is excellent, 83 to 96 good, 68 to 82 average, 54 to 67 low average, below 54 poor.
Does the Harvard step test measure VO2 max?
No. It measures how fast your heart rate recovers after five minutes of stepping, which is related to aerobic fitness but is a different quantity. For an estimated VO2 max from a step test, use the Queens College protocol.
What is the short form of the Harvard step test?
Index = (100 x seconds) / (5.5 x the first pulse count from 1:00 to 1:30). The calculator uses it when you enter only the first count. The long form with three counts is more stable.
