Zone 2 Heart Rate Calculator
This band is a starting point, not your real ceiling. Fixed percentages miss badly for many individuals. Verify with the drift test below.
Zone 2 is where your aerobic base gets built, and the whole method depends on one number: the ceiling you must stay under. The calculator above gives you a starting band from your max heart rate, then does something most zone calculators skip. It verifies the number against a real workout.
Why the percentage is only a starting point
Most zone 2 calculators stop at the formula: 60-70% of max heart rate. That band is a reasonable place to begin, and it is also the reason so many athletes train their easy days wrong. The physiological event that defines zone 2, your first lactate threshold, does not sit at a fixed percentage of max for everyone. Trained athletes tend to hit it higher, untrained adults lower, and the individual spread is wide enough that two athletes with the same max heart rate can have real ceilings 15 beats apart.
If you know your measured max heart rate, use it. If not, the calculator estimates it from your age with the Tanaka formula (208 minus 0.7 times age), which drifts less with age than the old 220-minus-age rule. Either way, treat the band as a hypothesis.
The drift test: how you verify the ceiling
This is the part that separates a real zone 2 ceiling from a guessed one, and it needs nothing but a heart rate monitor and 50 minutes.
Ride or run 50 minutes at a steady effort you believe is zone 2, holding constant pace and conditions. Compare your average heart rate in the first 25 minutes to the last 25. If your heart rate drifted less than 3%, you were at or under your ceiling, and that was genuine aerobic base work. Between 3 and 5% is borderline. More than 5% drift at constant pace means you were above your first lactate threshold: drop about 5 beats and run the test again next week.
Enter both halves in the calculator and it gives you the verdict. A few weeks of this converges on your real ceiling without a lab visit.
The mistake the calculator cannot fix
Zone 2 feels too easy. That is the point, and it is also why most people quietly ride ten beats above it, week after week, in the gray zone that tires you out without building the base. Once the drift test has given you a number, the discipline to stay under it is on you. The talk test is the everyday check: at true zone 2 you can speak full sentences, slightly annoyed at having to.
