What Your Readiness Score Means Today

Your Garmin Training Readiness score arrives every morning as a number between 0 and 100, and it feels like it should mean something. A 72 feels clear: you are ready. A 28 feels like a warning. The problem is that the score is a composite of six different signals, each one measured with varying accuracy, blended by an algorithm Garmin has not published, and wrapped in language that promises more predictive power than the underlying data contains. This guide unpacks what the number represents, which inputs matter most, and when you should trust it versus the feeling in your legs.
What Readiness Scores Measure
A readiness score is a daily summary that attempts to answer one question: is your body prepared for hard training today? Garmin's Training Readiness combines six inputs: sleep score, HRV status, and remaining recovery time, plus acute training load, sleep history, and stress history.
Body Battery, Garmin's real-time energy score, is simpler and more continuous. It measures HRV, stress, sleep quality, and activity as a single 0-100 energy estimate, where activity is the main drain. Body Battery rises during rest and sleep, falls during physical and mental stress, and is meant to represent your available physiological reserves right now, not tomorrow.
Both scores answer the same underlying question in different ways: am I recovered enough to train hard today, or should I back off? The distinction matters because Training Readiness looks backward (how did I recover overnight?) while Body Battery looks at current state (what is my energy level right now?).
Why Your Readiness Score Is Mostly Not Predictive
Here is the finding most runners and cyclists never learn: readiness scores do not predict how well you will perform on a given day. A 2026 analysis of over 5,000 steady runs found that morning Training Readiness had essentially zero correlation with how the run felt or performed. The median within-athlete correlation was 0.056. Statistical noise.
This does not mean the score is meaningless. It does mean you cannot use it as a performance predictor the way the interface implies. A high readiness score does not guarantee a great run. A low score does not guarantee a bad one. The researchers found that highest-readiness days sometimes produced worse runs than moderate-readiness days, and the spread across readiness quintiles was negligible.
What the score does reliably measure is recent training load and recovery debt. When you validate the algorithm against yesterday's training load, the correlation jumps to -0.272 (higher load yesterday, lower readiness today), proving the measurement machinery works. The problem is not in the inputs. The problem is in the composite recipe that blends them into a single predictive claim.
The Role of HRV Baseline in Your Score

Your own HRV baseline requires at least 28 days of consistent measurement to be meaningful, which is why new wearable owners see erratic readiness scores that stabilize after about a month. When Devices Disagree
If you have tried Garmin, Whoop, Oura Ring, or Apple Watch on the same wrist, you may have noticed their readiness scores diverge sharply. A day rated 72 on Garmin might be 34 on Whoop. This is not random. It reflects real differences in sensor placement, sampling windows, outlier handling, and even which specific HRV metrics each device reports.
A 2025 validation study in Physiological Reports tested nocturnal HRV from five wearables against an ECG reference across 536 nights. Oura Gen 4 showed the highest concordance (CCC = 0.99), WHOOP was intermediate (CCC = 0.94), and Garmin Fenix 6 was notably lower (CCC = 0.87). More importantly, the composite readiness scores built on top of the HRV measurements are largely unvalidated. You are trusting good ingredients assembled by a recipe nobody has checked.
The practical rule: pick one device and track your trends within it. Do not compare your readiness score to a friend's device or switch between wearables expecting consistency. Consistency exists within a device over time. Consistency across devices does not.

Garmin's two readiness-style scores behave differently, and it matters which one you are reading at which time of day. A rough night leaves a ceiling on the score no calm afternoon fully lifts, which is why a poor morning score can undersell how trainable you actually feel by evening. The score is a well-informed estimate of your capacity, not a live readout of it.
Neither score tells you whether you will have a good workout. Both tell you whether your nervous system is in a debt-paying phase (low score) or a surplus phase (high score). What Readiness Scores Tell You

Some runners run their best efforts on low-readiness days because they are mentally sharp despite physical debt. Others use a low score as permission to do a recovery session they needed anyway. The score is a symptom detector, not a performance forecaster.
Think of readiness as a mirror that shows you recovery debt, not a crystal ball that shows performance. When you look in the mirror after a hard week, you can see the fatigue. The readiness score is that mirror digitized. It does not tell you whether the mirror's reflection will run well today.
When Readiness Scores Are Useful
If readiness scores are not predictive, why track them at all? Because they are useful in three specific situations. First, as a weekly trend monitor. A readiness score that stays below 50 for three straight days is a real signal that training load outpaced recovery. This often precedes the overtraining symptoms of flat performance, mood changes, or elevated resting heart rate.
Second, as a tie-breaker when you are already uncertain. On a day when you cannot decide between a tempo run and an easy jog, and your readiness score is 25, the easy jog is the better choice. On a day when you cannot decide and your score is 75, the tempo run is reasonable. But only use the score to break an existing tie, not to create the entire decision.
Third, as validation that your HRV baseline is tracking correctly. If your readiness score is consistently low despite good sleep and easy training, your HRV baseline may have drifted or your device may need recalibration. Check whether you have worn it consistently for the past month, whether you have had unusual stress, or whether caffeine or alcohol consumption has spiked.
