A number between 0 and 100 lands on your wrist every morning. A 72 reads as ready. A 28 reads as a warning. The number feels like it should mean something, and that is the trouble, because the score is six different signals blended by an algorithm Garmin has never published, each signal measured with its own accuracy, then wrapped in language promising far more predictive power than the underlying data carries. What Readiness Scores Measure
One question, once a day: is your body prepared for hard training? Garmin's Training Readiness answers with six inputs, sleep score, HRV status, and remaining recovery time, plus acute training load, sleep history, and stress history.
Body Battery is simpler. Why Your Readiness Score Is Mostly Not Predictive
Readiness scores do not predict how well you will perform on a given day. Most runners and cyclists never hear this. A 2026 analysis of over 5,000 steady runs found that morning Training Readiness had essentially zero correlation with how the run felt or performed, and the median within-athlete correlation came out at 0.056. Statistical noise.
The score is not meaningless. It fails as a performance predictor, whatever the interface implies. A high score guarantees nothing about the run ahead, a low one guarantees nothing either, and the researchers found highest-readiness days that produced worse runs than moderate-readiness days, with a negligible spread across readiness quintiles.
Recent training load and recovery debt: that part the score measures reliably, and when you validate the algorithm against yesterday's training load the correlation jumps to -0.272, higher load yesterday, lower readiness today, which proves the measurement machinery works. Your own baseline needs at least 28 days of consistent measurement before it means anything, which is why new wearable owners watch erratic readiness scores settle down after about a month. When Devices Disagree
Wear Garmin, Whoop, Oura Ring, or Apple Watch on the same wrist and the readiness scores pull apart fast, a day rated 72 on Garmin coming back 34 on Whoop. Not random. Sensor placement, sampling windows, outlier handling, even which specific HRV metrics a device chooses to report: those differences are real.
A 2025 validation study in Physiological Reports put nocturnal HRV from five wearables against an ECG reference across 536 nights, and Oura Gen 4 came out highest (CCC = 0.99), WHOOP sat in the middle (CCC = 0.94), Garmin Fenix 6 landed lower (CCC = 0.87). The bigger issue sits one layer up. Composite readiness scores built on those HRV measurements are largely unvalidated, and none of the major ones (Garmin Training Readiness, Whoop Recovery, Oura Readiness) have undergone rigorous independent peer-reviewed validation. Good ingredients, recipe nobody has checked.
Practical rule: pick one device, track your trends inside it, and do not compare your score to a friend's device or switch wearables expecting the numbers to line up. Within a device, over time, consistency exists. Across devices it does not.

Rearward-looking recovery meters, not forward-looking performance predictors. That is the category. A low score means your body is still paying off recent stress, a high score means the debt is settled, and neither state dictates how fast you will run or how strong you will lift today.
A low score almost always traces back to the same two causes: hard training recently, bad sleep, or both, and about your current fatigue the score is not wrong. Some runners hit their best efforts on low-readiness days, mentally sharp on top of physical debt, while others take the low number as permission for the recovery session they needed anyway. Symptom detector, not forecaster.
Readiness is a mirror, not a crystal ball. Look in it after a hard week and the fatigue is right there on your face, which is the same job the number does, that mirror digitized. It says nothing about how the reflection will run today.
When Readiness Scores Are Useful
So why track them at all? Three situations. First, as a weekly trend monitor: a score that stays below 50 for three straight days is a real signal that training load outpaced recovery, and that pattern often runs ahead of the overtraining symptoms of flat performance, mood changes, or elevated resting heart rate.
Second, as a tie-breaker when you are already torn. Tempo run or easy jog, no clear pull either way, score at 25: take the jog, and at 75 the tempo run is reasonable. Break an existing tie with it. Do not let it build the whole decision.
Third, as a check that your HRV baseline is tracking correctly: a score that stays low through good sleep and easy training points at a drifted baseline or a device that needs recalibration. Then go look: worn it consistently this past month, unusual stress, caffeine or alcohol spiking?
