Yes, this is one of the most practical uses of HRV data. At or above your 7-day rolling average, your body is signaling readiness for high-intensity work. Does HRV improve with training fitness over time?
Yes. As aerobic fitness improves, resting heart rate tends to fall and HRV tends to rise, reflecting better autonomic regulation. Consistent Zone 2 training is particularly effective for this. HRV also gets more volatile during intense blocks. A suppressed reading during a planned overreach is normal, provided it rebounds during the deload.
How does HRV relate to overtraining?
Persistently suppressed HRV over 2-3 weeks, alongside declining performance, disrupted sleep, and low motivation, is a strong signal of functional overreaching or early overtraining. A multi-week downward trend despite adequate sleep usually means recovery is not keeping pace with training load. That is the moment to drop volume and prioritize recovery tools like NSDR over another hard session.
How does cold exposure affect HRV?
Acutely, cold immersion drops HRV during the exposure as the sympathetic system fires, followed by a parasympathetic rebound afterward. Some evidence suggests a regular practice may support autonomic regulation and resting HRV over time, but the long-term data is limited.
